About James

Hello! I’ve been an artist for 25 years painting portraits, landscapes and seascapes. I’m a Royal portrait painter and an official war artist. I live in the beautiful city of Edinburgh.

I love the challenge of painting, whether it be people or landscapes, to catch their character and realism in a traditional, expressive flurry of paint.

I believe that a painting should look like a painting with visible brush marks which gives an interesting, expressive painted surface to bring out the character and feeling of the scene.
